Two reels arrive on the same pole job: one stenciled “Penguin 4/0 ACSR” and one “4/0 AAC”. The crew asks which one is stronger for a long span. Pick before you read on.
The Penguin 4/0 ACSR is stronger for a long span. The letters tell you why. ACSR means Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced: aluminum strands carry the current, wrapped around a steel core that carries the mechanical tension. The 4/0 AAC is All-Aluminum Conductor, which is the same size in aluminum but has no steel to hold the pull, so it sags more between poles. Same number, different build, different job.
Bare overhead conductor comes in four families, and the code on the reel tells you which one you have. ACSR (Aluminum Conductor Steel Reinforced) puts a steel core under the aluminum for strength, so it spans far with the least sag. AAC (All-Aluminum Conductor) drops the steel: it has slightly better conductivity and is common on short urban spans where sag is not the worry. AAAC (All-Aluminum-Alloy Conductor) uses a stronger aluminum alloy instead of a steel core, trading a little conductivity for strength with no steel to corrode, which is why it shows up along the coast. ACAR (Aluminum Conductor Alloy Reinforced) reinforces with alloy strands instead of steel, splitting the difference.
The second word on the reel is a bird. The codewords are a standard naming system, and they scale with size: Raven is 1/0, Pigeon is 3/0, Penguin is 4/0, Linnet is 336.4 kcmil, and Hawk is 477 kcmil. As you climb the ladder of bird names the conductor gets bigger, with more cross-sectional area and more ampacity. So “Penguin 4/0 ACSR” reads as one fact: a 4/0 steel-reinforced aluminum conductor.
Read the reel as two facts: the family (ACSR, AAC, AAAC, ACAR) tells you how it is built, and the codeword tells you how big it is. Get both and you know what is on the truck without unspooling it. A buyer confirming a delivery, a tech pulling the right reel, and an engineer sizing a span are all reading the same stencil for the same two answers.
