You walk up to a padmount switchgear door and the warning label spells it out: arc-flash boundary 36 in, incident energy 8.4 cal/cm² at 18 in working distance, required PPE Category 3. You are wearing arc-rated clothing rated 8 cal/cm². Before you reach for the handle, decide: is your gear good enough to work at that label?
It is not, and the gap is small enough to miss. Your clothing’s arc rating must meet or exceed the incident energy on the label, and 8 cal/cm² is below 8.4 cal/cm². There is no rounding, no close-enough. If the label says 8.4, you wear gear rated 8.4 or higher.
The two numbers people mix up are incident energy and the arc-flash boundary, and they are not the same kind of thing. Incident energy is an energy in cal/cm², measured at a stated working distance, and it sets the minimum arc rating of your PPE. The arc-flash boundary is a distance, 36 in here, and it marks where an unprotected worker could take a second-degree burn from the arc.
Read the label as four separate facts, not one blur. The boundary tells you how far back an unprotected person must stay. The working distance, 18 in, is where the incident energy was calculated, usually your face and chest at the task. The incident energy sets the PPE arc rating, and the PPE category gives you the matching clothing system. Incident energy drives the rating of your clothing; the boundary is a distance you keep, and the two are never interchangeable.
So the label is not a warning to glance past. It is a short instruction set: stand outside 36 in unless you are protected, and to work at 18 in, wear arc-rated PPE whose rating meets or beats 8.4 cal/cm². Your 8 cal/cm² gear does not, so it stays in the truck until you have the right system on.
