Distribution transformers come in styles matched to how the line is built. Two dominate the conversation.

A pole-mount transformer hangs on a pole and is fed by overhead line. It is the familiar gray can on rural and older urban circuits. It is cheap to install and easy to reach for repair.

A pad-mount transformer sits at ground level on a concrete pad, inside a locked steel enclosure. It pairs with underground service, so you see it in newer subdivisions and commercial sites where the lines are buried. The enclosure keeps the public out and protects the unit.

The electrical job is the same in both: step the distribution voltage down for customers. The choice between them follows the line. Overhead line gets pole-mount; underground service gets pad-mount.
